Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez signs goggles to be raffled during Black Eyed Susan and Preakness stakes to raise funds for Thoroughbreds and permanently disabled jockeys.

Signed jockey goggles offered at Preakness

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) have come together to offer signed jockey goggles as a part of a joint fund-raising effort. The goggles, signed by top-class jockeys, will be available as a souvenir in exchange for a donation to be shared between the two organizations. The TAA and PDJF will be offering the goggles on site at Pimlico Race Course on Black-Eyed Susan Day (May 20) and Preakness Stakes Day (May 21). Little Silver Charm, the official “spokeshorse” at Old Friends, the not-for-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, Ky., will make his debut as an author with the release of A Charmed Life (Old Friends Press). The 80-page, softcover book, penned with the assistance from former Boston Globe columnist Diane White, combines selected commentary from Little Silver Charm’s popular Facebook page with photos from Eclipse-Award winning photographer Barbara Livingston, the Lexington-based EquiSport Photos, and New York lenser Connie Bush, among many others. Award of merit goes to TRF’s John Evans

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Thoroughbred Charities of America has named John Evans as its first TCA Award of Merit recipient of 2016. Evans was presented with the award in front of 400 guests at the 54th annual Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association gala held in Ocala, Fla. March 14. The award honors his work as farm manager at the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s Second Chance Farm at the Lowell Correctional Institute in Ocala, where inmates are taught equine vocational skills while caring for retired racehorses.
