Miranda Prather curled up on a rubber matt next to her sick horse’s stall and pulled a horse blanket over her shoulder for warmth in the late August chill. The barn was so quiet in the middle of the night. All she could hear was horses breathing and shifting about in their stalls. Munching hay. Sometimes a bat flew overhead as she listened in fear. In the large waterside reception room of the Danversport Yacht Club, Michael Blowen returned to the Suffolk Downs racing colony Thursday night to accept honors for his heroic work providing dignified retirements for ex-racehorse Thoroughbreds. As a crowd of 300 people looked on, Blowen was presented with the New England Turf Writers Association’s Sam McCracken Memorial Award at the 69th annual Awards Dinner. The organization’s top honor recognizes Blowen’s pioneering efforts to found and maintain Old Friends, a racehorse retirement in Kentucky, with his wife Diane White. On a sunny afternoon at Hollywood Park Mr. Wolverine surprised them all when he surged at the top of the stretch and beat Grade 1 Stakes winner Lava Man in a race that gets replayed quite a bit in Lisa Pratt’s household.
