New Vocations receives $50K in grants
Blue Horse Charities and Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) has awarded New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program more than $50,000 in grants to buoy efforts to rehabilitate, train and re-home retired racehorses, according to a press release from New Vocations. The grant money comes at a critical time, according to New Vocations Program Director Anna Ford, who says current drought conditions have driven up the cost of hay. “Hay prices have doubled and the cost of caring for the horses in our program continues to rise,” Ford says. “We have new horses arriving into the program on a weekly basis, and […]

As Mascot hobbled onto the trailer that would carry him far from meat buyers and slaughterhouses, to a safe, loving home, there were six more behind him, thin and forlorn, in danger of falling through the cracks. Like him, they were scheduled to ship to the New Holland auction, according to Thoroughbred advocate Deborah Jones. The sad-eyed racehorses coming off the track were a sight Dr. Ken Lian, DVM, was never able to shake. And despite, or possibly because, he had been a longtime fan of horse racing, it always seemed to him that the life of a racehorse could be improved. In the summer of 2010, Lian and a collective of like-minded veterinarians, race trainers, farriers, animal-welfare advocates, horseman and backside workers, formed Thoroughbred Education Foundation, Inc., nicknamed it ThoroughbredEd, and went to work.
