Stakes winner Flick euthanized at Old Friends

GEORGETOWN, Ky.—Stakes winner Flick has died. The 24-year-old gelding, who resided at Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Farm in Georgetown, KY, was euthanized Friday morning due to complications from colic. Michael Blowen, founder and president of Old Friends, made the announcement Jan. 8. Bred in England by Side Hill Stud, Flick (Kris (GB) – Thakhayr (IRE), Sadler’s Wells) had three starts in England before coming to the U.S. near the end of his 2-year-old season. Touch Gold retires to Old Friends

GEORGETOWN, KY — Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold, the horse famous for denying Silver Charm the Triple Crown in 1997, has been retired to Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, Ky. Michael Blowen, founder and president of Old Friends, made the announcement yesterday. The 21-year-old stallion comes to Old Friends from Adena Springs in Paris, Ky., and has been generously donated by Adena owner Frank Stronach along with an endowment. OTTBs charities set to receive nearly $3 million

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) announced today that $2.48 million in grants will be awarded to its 56 accredited aftercare organizations. The financial grants are provided to support the ongoing care of the Thoroughbreds that the organizations work to retire, retrain, and rehome. Each organization accredited by the TAA has undergone a thorough application, inspection, and review process to ensure they meet the TAA’s code of standards. The 56 currently accredited organizations have all met or exceeded the standards set forth in the categories of operations, education, horse health care management, facility standards and services, and adoption policies and protocols.
