Charities run, shine, break ground for t’breds

TRF hosts Run for the Horses SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) has expanded the mission of its annual 5K Run/Walk for the Horses to support all local racehorse welfare organizations. The Sixth Annual Run for the Horses, which has been selected as a Saratoga Centennial Event, will be held Saturday morning, September 5, 2015 at the Orenda Pavilion at the Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs. American Pharoah’s legacy helps OTTB charities

GEORGETOWN, Ky. —JUNE 8, 2015 – Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, Ky., will be the recipient of a $50,000 donation from Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and his wife, Jill. Baffert’s American Pharoah swept the coveted Triple Crown–the first in 37 years–when he won the Belmont Stakes on June 6. Immediately following the horse’s victory the Bafferts pledged a $50,000 donation each to four charitable organizations: Old Friends, The Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund, The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and CARMAcares. Horse program for vets launched in Calif.

Escalon, Calif.— “Stable Survivors,” a new project designed by Healing Arenas, Inc. to address the emotional wellbeing of the area’s underserved veterans population and their families, has been launched. An opening ceremony and demonstrations of the new program will be offered June 25 during an open house at Healing Arenas Ranch in Escalon,  Calif., beginning at 6:30 p.m. The initiative pairs EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association—(www.eagala.org) certified mental health professionals and equine specialists, with adoptable retired racehorses in a program to help veterans adapt to civilian life. “Horses help with transitions that humans experience throughout life.
