Their task was to demonstrate to the crowd that off-track Thoroughbreds are the most trainable, elegant, versatile partners that a human can find anywhere. Multiple stakes winner Awakino Cat, 10, was retired from racing this month after knocking in 72 starts and earning north of $600,000. Eight weeks shy of his 11th birthday, the quirky bay gelding ran one last time at Penn National before he was turned over to his former assistant trainer of six years, Samantha Randazzo, who with the help of Parx Racing Secretary Sam Elliott, brokered a deal with the gelding’s most recent owner/trainer, David Neilson. At 20 years old, Viva Pentelicus is far from slowing down. Instead, the poster boy for Healing Arenas in California will be back to work at California Agriculture Day – AG Day 2016 – on Wednesday, March 16 on the West Steps of the California State Capitol in Sacramento. The event is hosted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
