Olympic three-day Eventer Boyd Martin says there was no “mystery” to his decision to compete an off-track Thoroughbred against the very best sport horses at Rolex last month. Simply put, his 11-year-old gelding Blackfoot Mystery was the best horse for the job, even pitted against “specifically bred” international sport horses who drop from their mother’s bellies with the genes to compete at all three phases: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Camelot pauper is show-ring prince
A dusty Camelot castaway, plucked by chance from an auction that could have catapulted him to the slaughterhouse, is now on the cusp of a first-class hunter/jumper career. Atom, an un-raced bay Thoroughbred, has emerged from his shell under the training of Mooresville, N.C. trainer Karen Benson to take high ribbons in big classes at the Totally Thoroughbred Show at Pimlico, clearing jump after jump with the high-knee tuck of the refined show horse he was born to be. “He has an amazing natural talent,” says Benson, who helped save him from the Camelot auction in 2012. “He’s so good […]

Students dance 27 hours to raise $14K for horses
Philanthropic high school students in Virginia recently donated $14,000 to help the horses and inmates at the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s (TRF) James River facility. Following months of fundraising, the drive culminated in a 27-hour Deep Run Marathon Dance, which raised funds for 12 charities, including the TRF. Students, who considered applications from 53 charities, were so impressed by the work the TRF does to help prison inmates and horses through its unique Second Chances program, that they presented the charity with a check to purchase a four-wheel-drive vehicle needed to maintain the farm. “The donation restores my faith in humanity,” says Anne […]
