A 20-year-old rescue mare who once had nothing—not a name, not papers, not enough food to sustain her bedraggled frame—has had everything returned, even a relic of her past glory. OTTB rematch held at PA Horse World Expo

BY STEUART PITTMAN—Five graduates of last year’s Retired Racehorse Project’s  $100,000 Thoroughbred Makeover, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, performed this weekend in Harrisburg at the Pennsylvania Horse World Expo. Their task was to demonstrate to the crowd that off-track Thoroughbreds are the most trainable, elegant, versatile partners that a human can find anywhere. Parx Racing official helps retire warhorse, 10

Multiple stakes winner Awakino Cat, 10, was retired from racing this month after knocking in 72 starts and earning north of $600,000. Eight weeks shy of his 11th birthday, the quirky bay gelding ran one last time at Penn National before he was turned over to his former assistant trainer of six years, Samantha Randazzo, who with the help of Parx Racing Secretary Sam Elliott, brokered a deal with the gelding’s most recent owner/trainer, David Neilson.
