Brooks Clement adopted OTTB Merlin from the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at James River in 2013. Merlin was always “deathly afraid” of cows, but little by little he warmed up to them. Here, Merlin greets a cow at the TRF facility at James River, where Clement now rides.
Says Clement, “Though this may look like a simple greeting between two animals, it represents about six months of work. It made me feel great that he trusted me because he really doesn’t connect with many people.”

My OTTB’s have always been afraid of cows too! Sometimes I wish I had one in a safe location so I could get her used to one. Good job!
I have just got to sent this to my cousin in Australia – she’s a dairy farmer.
Cute picture!! Glad your months of work paid off so well!!
