Exceller Fund lures members with shares in filly
The Exceller Fund wants its supporters to have some skin in the game. So this week, in a unique bid to boost its membership, the Thoroughbred retirement foundation raffled off a 10-percent honorary share in the race filly Great Cross, the daughter of Kitten’s Joy. New and longtime members were entered in a raffle to own a part of a racehorse for six months, and get a taste for all the perks that go along with it, says Nicole Smith, executive director of volunteers for the Exceller Fund. Picked to live, a dark horse is her chosen one
It was down to the dark gelding or the barren broodmare. She could only take one. Knowing that whoever she passed over would most likely meet a horrific end in the slaughterhouse, Beverly Strauss of MidAtlantic Horse Rescue agonized between the two horses at the New Holland auction on a hot July day in 2006. Citing difficulties re-homing one of their racing stock, Jan Vandebos and Robert Naify of RanJan Racing announced this month their ongoing commitment to their OTTBs, even if it means keeping some horses forever in their farm-based aftercare program.
